On 10 April 2025, UMST University joined more than 1,000 community members in the Nyarugunga Sector of Kigali for a solemn genocide commemoration ceremony.
Nyarugunga holds particular historical significance — located near the former presidential residence, the sector witnessed some of the earliest violence of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. The ceremony brought together residents, local authorities, and members of the UMST university community in an act of collective remembrance and solidarity.
UMST's presence at community-level commemorations reflects the university's commitment to being an active, engaged member of Rwandan society — not merely an institution within it.
