UMST Rwanda Welcomes 33rd Cohort of Medical and Dental Students with a Call to Excellence, Ethics and Service

The University of Medical Sciences and Technology (UMST) Rwanda officially welcomed its 33rd cohort of medical and dental students during a colourful Orientation and Induction Ceremony that brought together parents, students, faculty, government officials, professional regulators and members of the diplomatic community.
The ceremony highlighted UMST's commitment to academic excellence, ethics, professionalism and service to humanity, with speakers encouraging the new students to embrace the opportunities ahead and prepare to become compassionate healthcare professionals.
Representing Rwanda's Ministry of Education, Dr. Theoneste Ndikubwimana from the Higher Education Council (HEC) reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting UMST's growth.
He said the Ministry of Education, through HEC, will continue working with the university to expand student enrolment while ensuring the quality of programmes offered.
"The Ministry will continue to support UMST in increasing its student numbers and provide the necessary support to strengthen its academic programmes," he said, adding that HEC remains committed to ensuring that parents and learners receive the quality education they deserve.
Congratulating the new students on joining UMST, Dr. Ndikubwimana encouraged them to fully embrace the opportunity before them and dedicate themselves to academic excellence.
Representing Rwanda's Ministry of Health, Dr. Menelas Nkeshimana, Head of the Health Workforce Development Department, praised UMST's training facilities and urged students to make the most of their education.
"I have had the opportunity to visit these facilities on several occasions, and I can confidently say to the students: you are fortunate to be learning in such an environment. Make the most of this opportunity," he said.
He encouraged the students to work hard academically while building lifelong friendships and professional networks.
"Study hard, build lifelong friendships, expand your professional networks, learn from one another, and even take the opportunity to learn a new language and appreciate new cultures," he advised.
Dr. Menelas reminded the future healthcare professionals that their education carries a responsibility to serve society.
"When you graduate, use your knowledge and skills to serve humanity. Take good care of your country. Take good care of the people of Rwanda and the friends of Rwanda who call this country home," he said.
Speaking on behalf of the UMST Board of Trustees, Dr. Suzan Homeida welcomed the newest members of the UMST academic community, noting the growing global demand for highly skilled and ethical medical professionals.
"Here at UMST, we are committed to providing an education of the highest international standard," she said, adding that the university remains unwavering in its commitment to ethics and professionalism.
She challenged the students to uphold the values that define the medical profession.
"We expect from you discipline, diligence, intellectual humility and respect for the trust that will be placed in your hands."
Dr. Homeida also expressed appreciation to parents for entrusting UMST with their children's education, assuring them that the university is committed to nurturing responsible professionals and citizens.
UMST Vice Chancellor Prof. Samir Shaheen reaffirmed the university's commitment to supporting Rwanda's healthcare development agenda.
"To the Ministers here today: You have given us bright young minds to shape. We promise that we will return to you skilled professionals, honest practitioners and proud citizens," he said.
"Our graduates will actively support Rwanda's healthcare goals, including the Government's 4x4 initiative. UMST is proud to be a partner in building the country's healthcare workforce."
Prof. Shaheen also reflected on UMST's rich heritage, noting that the university was founded in Sudan in 1996 and has grown into an internationally recognised private institution committed to excellence in medical education.
The ceremony was also attended by the Sudanese Ambassador to Rwanda, who applauded the growing social and cultural ties between Sudan and Rwanda.
"We are one family," he said, describing the strengthening relationship between the people of the two countries as a foundation for continued cooperation in education and development.
Also present was Dr. Marc Sebaganji, Registrar of the Rwanda Medical and Dental Council, who reminded students that they were embarking on a demanding but rewarding professional journey.
"Today marks the beginning of your professional journey one that will challenge you intellectually and shape you professionally," he said.
On behalf of continuing students, the student representative welcomed the new cohort and pledged to support them throughout their academic journey at UMST.
The orientation concluded with interactive games, cultural performances and traditional dances, providing the new students with an opportunity to interact with faculty, fellow students and their families while celebrating the beginning of an exciting chapter in their medical education.
The induction ceremony reaffirmed UMST's mission of producing competent, ethical and compassionate healthcare professionals equipped to serve Rwanda, Africa and the global community.
