Five UMST medical students collaborated with MEDSAR (Medical Students Alliance for Rwanda) on a three-day community health outreach programme in Nyagatare District, Eastern Province.
The team delivered free screenings for non-communicable diseases, HIV, and hepatitis B, reaching hundreds of community members who would otherwise have limited access to such services. The experience proved deeply formative for the student volunteers.
One participating student reflected: "Healthcare is not only about treatment — it is about education, connection, and compassion. This outreach reminded us why we chose medicine." The initiative exemplifies UMST's ethos of producing graduates who are not only clinically excellent but socially committed.
